LUSELAND CANADA DAY
2007

The July 1st celebrations in Luseland this year were another success that the community can be proud of.

Friday, July 1st began with a beautiful morning for the official opening to the event. Committee Co-chairperson Donna Fowler thanked everyone involved on the committee as well as all the volunteers for their tireless efforts to ensure everything ran smoothly. The Town Crew was thanked for their work to keep the town and fairgrounds looking great. On behalf of the Town, Brenda Martfeld, thanked everyone for coming and congratulated the committee for their hard work. As the Guides raised the flag, the crowd led by the Luseland Ensemble sang “O Canada, and hundreds of colorful balloons were released to start the day. The Town and the Pioneer Club invited everyone to join them for birthday cake and coffee at the Pioneer Club. The Pioneer Club also hosted a Bingo in the afternoon.

The Knights of Columbus and C.W.L., along with a number of volunteers, prepared a Pancake Breakfast which was very well attended this year again. The Museum held a ceremony in celebration of their 15th Anniversary. Cake and coffee were served along with homemade ice cream. The Luseland Golf Course offered free golf for the day.

A display in the hall featured a sample of the art exhibit being displayed at the Theatre. “Within Our Borders” featuring work by Larisa Strobel and Jean Humphrey will be at the Luseland Summer Gallery throughout the summer. Also in the hall was a display of a custom built bicycle and air brush tattoos by Mark Lannigan.

Sixteen teams participated in the double-knockout Mixed Slowpitch tournament. Chad Walz and the Beer Hours defeated Landon Zimmer with his Shake and Bake team in the “A” final. The “B” final was captured by Darrel Kraft and his team “Krafty & Co.” who defeated Ross Neumeier’s Kerrobert team in the “B” final.

There were many more activities at the fairgrounds. More than 673 people came through the gate over the day. Many volunteers were needed to operate the activities. The beer gardens were operated by the Luseland Wildlife with help from other individuals. Entertainment was provided by Frank Beausoleil and friends. The beach volleyball court was in use most of the time. The children were entertained throughout with the Cat In The Hat Train, Merry-Go-Round, as well as two Apollo Jumps for the kids. The activities for the children on the grounds are an important part of the day and require many volunteers to operate smoothly. It will be necessary to have a lot more volunteers for next year in order to continue offering these entertaining events.

The Library Board provided a craft activity for the children. Jean Halliday, Donna Holton, and friends were on hand for face painting and balloon animals.

The fireworks were great! Bert Olfert and his crew (consisting of some of the Luseland firemen and others) provided another incredible display.

The Committee for this year’s celebrations would like to thank everyone for their invaluable contributions. The many activities of the weekend could not have happened without your support. This year’s committee consisted of Brian Honeker, Jason Thrun, Vanessa Thrun, Dorothy Magnus, Deven Reiber, Shannon Cuthbert, Conrad Gartner, Lawrence Meier, Tanis Sibley, and Donna Fowler. There are also many other individuals who ‘do what they do’ every year and we couldn’t do it without you. Congratulations on another great Canada Day, Luseland!
